Tupungato Volcano

High Summits in Mendoza

Very close to Mount Aconcagua and with almost the same height (6,820 meters above sea level), Tupungato Volcano is another of the highest peaks of South America.

It is situated 80 kilometers away to the south of the Aconcagua and on the Argentinean-Chilean border. It is in the Tupungato Provincial Park, which has 110,000 hectares meant to preserve the native flora and fauna of the area.

This volcano is a serious challenge for any mountaineer since it is an isolated 6,000-meter peak. Although it is technically simple, its perennial ice cap makes the last meters of the ascension difficult. It has three approximation routes, North, West and South, which are very similar in distance and complexity.

The landscape is particular for the snowdrifts which combine ice with the igneous rocks produced by the volcano.

This summit, as well as many others which are very little known in the Central Range, still keeps the sensation of untamed and silent nature, something good mountaineers always long for in their adventures.
