The Laguna de Llancanelo is a natural reserve located in the south of the province of Mendoza, only 470 kilometers away from Mendoza City and 75 kilometers from the city of Malargüe. This wetland of 65,000 hectares located at 1,300 meters above sea level, was declared, in the year 1980 and thanks to its high ecological value, as a Provincial Natural Reserve and Ramsar Site by the homonymous international organization.
The large extension of this blue water mirror contrasts with the golden semi desertic landscape which surrounds it, thus becoming, together with the imposing view of the Andean Range in the background, a place difficult to forget.
The lagoon has sandy and sludgy borders, floating platforms with live vegetation, sandy and saline beaches, sand flats, islands and islets.
It is considered one of the most important wetlands of South America and, being the habitat of more than 130 different bird species, it is the largest bird fauna shelter of the continent. One of the outstanding birds that we can find is the beautiful and colorful flamingo, of which there are three different species here. Besides, there are ten duck species nesting in this lagoon, the beautiful black-necked swam among them.
Llancanelo is a paradisiacal place which you can visit all the year round, and which is incomparable for eco-tourism, photographic safaris and bird-watching.

From Mendoza City, you must go to the south in the direction of the city of Malargüe, in an approximately six-hour journey.
You must take National Route 40, deviating in the area of Pareditas, where you must take Route 143 towards San Rafael. From the city of San Rafael, you will continue along Route 144 until you join National Route 40 again, which will lead you to the city of Malargüe.
From Malargüe, you must take Route 40 until Provincial Route 186, which will lead you to the reserve. The first kilometers of this road are paved, but BE CAREFUL, it suddenly becomes a gravel road and, depending on the weather of the previous days, it can be in very bad conditions.
