Independencia Square was designed after the earthquake that destroyed the old city in 1861.It is the center of a series of five squares that were projected to give protection to the inhabitants in case of a new earthquake.
This beautiful green space covers four blocks, where you can find an important variety of trees and large extensions of grass.
In the center, there is a beautiful fountain embraced by a wonderful piece of art, a frieze by a Mendocinean sculptress which becomes the base of a large esplanade. Different events, like the Fiesta de la Vendimia (Vintage Festival) of the City, take place here every year.
Two important cultural buildings are found in the underground level of this square: Quintanilla Theater and the Museum of Modern Art, which are important landmarks in the artistic and cultural life of the city.
This place is also the social center of Mendoza. Lots of people regularly come to this square to stroll around its beautiful crafts fair, witness varied performances, or just enjoy the tranquility that this green place offers in the middle of the city.
